Geoff's Challenge 2006

For 2006 Geoff came up with probably his best challenge yet, namely a small transceiver.

However Geoff was not content with this, he specified that it should have no more than 20 components in a screw top circular container.  To help us, Geoff stated that the 20 components need not include the power supply, ATU, filtering or keying etc.

Judging took place at our May 2006 meeting, with the winner decided by popular voting.  In the end there were three entries all of which were shown to work on the evening.

Phil Ciotti G3XBZ submitted a top-band cw transceiver based on a design from Practical Wireless and keeping within the 20 component count.  As can be seen in the photo on the left, Phil built it into a round sweet tin.

Alan Walker G4UWS entered a 80m cw transceiver based on the well-known Pixie.  This exceeded the component count by 1 in order to include an audio transformer to drive the headphones.  Alan’s transceiver, seen in the photo on the right, was also built into a round tin.

Colin Redwood G6MXL submitted an un-boxed 40m cw transmitter.  As can be seen in the picture below it used just three components, on a small piece of vero-board.

Each entry was briefly described by the builder, followed by a brief on-air test.  Members awarded 3 points to their first choice, 2 points to their second choice and 1 point to their third choice.

The winner was Phil’s top band transceiver with 26 points which was closely followed by Alan’s 80m transceiver with 23 points, with Colin’s 40m transceiver gaining 10 points.
